The Future of Higher Education and Workforce Development

Have you ever had the desire to study at a university like MIT, Notre Dame, Boston University, the University of Michigan or the University of California at Berkley? Are you interested in learning from some of the world’s most renowned university faculty? Would you like to provide your employees with continuing education but just can’t figure out a cost effective way to do so?

Well, now you can and, best of all, you can do it for free.

Indeed, a growing number of universities from throughout the world are utilizing an Internet format called Opencourse Ware to present academic courses on virtually every topic.

While the vast majority of these courses are not yet being offered for credit (it’s only a matter of time…), Opencourse Ware represents a shift in the manner in which Higher Education will be delivered. In short, it levels the educational playing field by vastly increasing student access to unique and specialized courses that would normally cost a small fortune.

Given the social/economic/technological realities of today, it doesn’t take a genius to predict that Opencourse Ware will greatly impact the delivery of education. To be sure, Workforce Development in particular and Higher Education in general will see dramatic changes in the next 10 years.

If you’re interested in additional information about Opencourse Ware, Fast Company has a feature article this month.

Happy learning!
